Move to Santa Fe, NM

I can't believe that it has been 5 years since I last posted on this blog.  I am still here!  Much has happened between then and now.  Most notably, I have moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico to become a Southwest artist.  I don't know what that means yet, but I intend to find out!

Major Milestone

As of September 2015, I will be partnering with artist Annie Meyer to share a permanent gallery space (The Annie Meyer Gallery) in the Pearl district in downtown Portland!

This is an amazing opportunity for me to expand my reach and dive more deeply into the local arts community. To kick it all off, the gallery will be featuring my work during the month of September.  Join me in celebrating this new venture on First Thursday September 3rd from 6-9pm.  My collection of paintings created over the last six months and titled “Migrations”will be on display with food and wine for everyone!

“Migrations” - Acrylic paintings on canvas
Opening Reception - September 3rd, 6-9pm
The Annie Meyer Gallery
120 NW 9th St. PDX
www.anniemeyergallery.com

In addition to The Annie Meyer Gallery refreshing their direction, the Quintana Gallery next door will change to Waterstone Gallery - also an artist run gallery that will be active and lively with monthly rotating shows.

And lastly, don’t forget that Art in the Pearl is coming up.  The 19th annual festival on Sat., Sun., and Mon., Sept. 5th, 6th & 7th, 2015 in the Pearl District's North Park Blocks.

Big Paintings

I have been working on some larger scale paintings.  This one is 4ft wide by 3ft tall.  That is pretty big for me.  It was not as difficult as I thought it would be.  It was simply a matter of diving in without thinking too much.  That way, there was no time to get intimidated...

6 months...

Man, I wish I were more of a risk taker.   Things would be so much easier.

After much consideration from many angles, spreadsheet number crunching, lengthy conversations, and deep breathing, I am taking six months off from my paying job to paint.

“What is the big deal?”  “Just take the time off,” you say.  “What are you waiting for?”

And, I wish I were that artsy impulsive person who says, “You are right,” “F-it,” and jumps.  But, I’m not.  I stew, I calculate, and I attempt to control fate.  I try and think of every potential pitfall and prepare myself ahead of time.  That way, I won’t get hurt and I won’t fail.  Right?

Luckily, deep within, right next to the practical and calculating self, there is a little voice that advocates for the artistic, creative, and unpredictable.  A glowing light that reasons with my practical self, and whispers, “art is important." “Painting is important." “Allow us the chance to forget time and be overtaken by the cyclone of creativity.”

Today, little voice wins.

THE BIG 500!

Opening - December 13th, 2014

This group show is gigantic!  Artists and curators Chris Haberman and Jason Brown along with Mark Woolley , The Peoples Art team, and a slew of volunteers are into their 7th year of putting on this enormous egalitarian art show. Every year the number advertised escalates. There are likely 600 artists contributing between 5-10 pieces of art to the show this year. If the trend continues next year the Big 600 will  really be the Big 700 and so on - The Big 1000 is not far away.

A sample of my submissions
Contributing artists (including myself) can submit work in any medium but artists need to bear in mind that the work will be handled a lot so it should be durable. There is a broad spectrum of work as the ages and art experience of the contributing artists covers a wide range. The walls of two galleries on the 3rd floor of Pioneer Place Mall are stacked 8 rows high with over 5000 art works, all 8" by 8" inches on wood panels supplied by People's Art, all priced at $40 each, 10% of the proceeds go to the Oregon Food Bank and to the galleries to cover expenses, and 90% to the artist.

The opening at 2pm on Saturday December 13th is a crush. Lines around the entire 3rd floor. There is certainly nothing like this show anywhere else in Oregon and I would wager you won't find anything of its kind anywhere else in the U.S. The Big 500 represents Portland art culture and community in all its quirky "anyone can play" beauty. Not only is there a varied swath of art makers represented, but the extremely low price point invites folks of a wide economic range to collect art. Avid, well heeled art collectors along with first time buyers and fellow artists scroll the walls for a special piece. Some patrons can be seen carrying stacks of art, no doubt getting their holiday shopping done. The work can be framed on the spot for $10 by the hard working volunteers who barely have time to look up for the fist few hours of the reception.

The Big 500 (and counting) is certainly is not the first art show of its kind in Portland to boast  lots of artists making art priced at bargain basement prices, but Chris Haberman and Jason Brown have taken the concept to a new level and honed it into an annual party event that is anticipated by collectors and artists alike. Nobody is getting rich here. The Oregon Food Bank makes out the best with a portion of the proceeds and barrels of food that are collected via the donations of the art patrons.

Open Studios Art Tour in October

I am a participating artist in Portland Open Studios which is an annual self-guided studio tour of 96 artists studios across the metro area during the second and third weekends in October.  Come see me!

The Tour takes place throughout the Portland metro area, which is Clackamas County, Multnomah County, and Washington County. Sometimes we have artists in Beaverton, Tigard, in the Pearl district of downtown Portland, way east of the I-205, and everywhere in between.

You need a map – that’s also your ticket.  You can buy a map at New Seasons.
  • You can buy a map on its own, which is called the ‘Map-only ticket’, for $5 here or at New Seasons.
  • You can buy the map along with a beautifully designed 16 month calendar featuring artwork from the participating artists, which is called the ‘Tour Guide Calendar’, for $20here.
  • You can buy an interactive smart-phone app with images from the participating artists, google maps for the address, the ability to plan which artists you will see and take notes about the artists you’ve visited and more, which is called the ‘Portland Open Studios App’, for $9.99, available for both iPhone and Android here.
